The former Brazilian president arrested after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
