Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
