RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
