The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
